What Is Danchi Days?
Set in 2000s Heisei-era Japan, Danchi Days centers on Hoshino Kanaoka, a headstrong 12-year-old girl who returns to her childhood hometown after years abroad. Upon moving back into a public housing complex (known in Japan as a danchi), she discovers her beloved grandmother Kimiko is now living with dementia.
When Hoshino learns that her grandmother once chaired the complex’s long-abandoned summer festival, she resolves to revive the event to bring joy back to her grandmother’s life. Joined by an amnesiac kappa assistant named Moro-Q, Hoshino sets off across the complex to collect five sacred offerings, convince reluctant neighbors, and uncover the forgotten history of her community.
While the game embraces a vibrant, comedic tone inspired by Game Boy Advance classics, it also tackles grounded real-world themes, including social isolation, aging populations, and community decline.
How Does Gameplay Work in Danchi Days?
Reconnecting a divided community requires creative problem-solving both on the ground and online:
- Turn Strangers into Neighbors: Each resident in the housing complex has a distinct personality and strict conditions for attending the festival. Players must navigate quirky tasks, such as eating an egg fried on a sun-scorched playground slide for Sizz or playing in rain puddles with mud-enthusiast Krysta Rippley.
- Surf NeighborNet: Players can log onto an in-game 2000s internet framework created by Hoshino’s father. Searching keywords unlocks personal blogs, community forums, and hidden websites that shed light on neighbor backstories, though some darker corners reveals hostility toward the festival.
- Interactive Sense Games: Before her diagnosis, Hoshino’s grandmother taught her to appreciate life through the five senses. Players engage in minigames based on sensory interactions, such as smelling trees by bumping into them, catching condensation droplets on iced tea glasses, or listening to ambient sounds from adjacent apartments.
