What Is the Story of Ever After Again: A Stories Adventure?
Taking place a decade after former sky pirate Reynardo defeated the mad Emperor Isengrim, peace has finally settled across the floating kingdom of Boreas. Reynardo has retired from his life of swashbuckling adventure alongside his sorceress wife, Zenobia. However, “happily ever after” proves short-lived when a sinister new threat endangers the realm once again.
To save the kingdom, Reynardo must reopen the Book of Destinies, an ancient artifact that allows him to relive looping timelines. The story is designed as a standalone entry, ensuring that players who never played the 2016 original can easily jump into the narrative.
How Do Gameplay Mechanics and Narrative Choices Work?
- Branching Time Loops: Every decision opens up unique story routes filled with secrets, unexpected consequences, or tragic deaths. When a timeline ends in failure, players return to the Book of Destinies armed with vital knowledge to unlock the true “Hero Path”.
- Reactive Sarcastic Narrator: A witty, sarcastic voice actor comments live on every player choice, celebration, and embarrassing tactical blunder throughout the campaign.
- Fast Action-RPG Combat: Combat pairs fluid swordplay, ranged options, and magical abilities into fast-paced encounters.
- Card-Based Loadouts: Completing storylines unlocks upgradeable cards featuring weapons, spells, and passive traits. Players can swap cards on the fly to shift Reynardo’s build from a fragile glass cannon into a heavy tank without restarting.
What Does This Announcement Mean for Spearhead Games?
The reveal of Ever After Again marks a triumphant comeback for Spearhead Games. The Montreal-based studio previously faced major hardships roughly two and a half years ago when it had to cancel its ambitious RPG project, Unforetold: Witchstone.
“We are very pleased to be back, especially to the world of Reynardo and friends,” stated Atul Mehra, co-founder of Spearhead Games. “The original Stories is one of the projects we are most proud of, and it has been wonderful to return to this world with a fresh perspective.”
While a full release date has not yet been set, players can test out the mechanics today by downloading the demo on Steam.
