Will Square Enix Remake Final Fantasy 6?
Square Enix directors Naoki Yoshida and Naoki Hamaguchi explain why a Final Fantasy 6 remake would require up to five full games to complete.
Square Enix producers Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida and Naoki Hamaguchi have warned JRPG fans that a modern remake of Final Fantasy 6 in the style of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy is extremely unlikely. Speaking on stage at the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival in Berlin, the veteran directors explained that due to the massive narrative scope of the 1994 Super Nintendo classic, a full AAA remake would require dividing the adventure into four or five separate titles.
Why Is a Final Fantasy 6 Remake So Difficult to Make?
During a 75-minute panel titled Naoki’s Room at the Berlin Fan Festival, Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy director Naoki Hamaguchi was asked which game influenced his decision to enter the gaming industry. Hamaguchi named Final Fantasy 6 as his personal favorite. However, he immediately clarified that his admiration for the 16-bit masterpiece does not mean Square Enix is greenlighting a remake.
Hamaguchi explained his frustration with internet rumors:
I have given this answer in many media interviews, and being a Square Enix title as well, I apologize for that, but Final Fantasy 6 is the reason I wanted to work in video games, so it will always have a special place in my heart. But whenever I give that answer to a journalist or someone, the next day there is an article online saying that Hamaguchi is going to remake Final Fantasy 6. So I also say, at the same time, that no, I am not going to.
Expanding on Hamaguchi’s point, Final Fantasy 14 producer Naoki Yoshida broke down the sheer logistical challenge facing Square Enix:
- Immense Narrative Scope: Unlike Final Fantasy 7, which follows a core protagonist group, Final Fantasy 6 features 14 playable ensemble cast members, an apocalyptic World of Ruin structural shift, and vast regional geography.
- Multiple Game Installments: Yoshida stated that recreating the entire world of Final Fantasy 6 with modern high-definition 3D graphics would require releasing four or five full-priced games.
- Team Fatigue and Retention: Hamaguchi emphasized that keeping a core development team together for over a decade is a rare industry achievement. Replicating the Final Fantasy 7 Remake effort for another decade-long multi-game project is unsustainable.
