What Is the Plot of From Far Away?
The story follows Noriko Tachiki, an ordinary high school student who finds her life upended when an unexpected explosion transports her into a medieval fantasy world populated by flying dragons and strange magic.
Upon arriving, she is rescued from hostile beasts by a traveling warrior named Izark Kia Tarj. While Izark appears brave, lonesome, and protective, he hides a terrifying secret: he is the literal reincarnation of the Sky Demon, a prophetic, cataclysmic evil destined to destroy the world.
Compounding their troubles, ancient lore dictates that Noriko is “The Awakening,” the specific individual prophesied to unleash the Sky Demon’s dormant powers. Bound together by fate and targeted by various warmongering kingdoms looking to weaponize them, the two unlikely allies must rely on one another to survive the beautiful yet dangerous wilderness.
A unique focal point of the narrative is its realistic approach to language barriers, forcing Noriko to slowly learn the local dialect over several months rather than gaining immediate mastery.
What Is the Legacy of the Original Manga?
Long before the modern isekai boom flooded the anime landscape, From Far Away set the gold standard for high fantasy storytelling. The series originally ran in the pages of Hakusensha’s LaLa magazine from 1991 to 2002, ultimately spanning 14 collected tankōbon volumes.
The narrative won the prestigious 35th Annual Seiun Award for Best Science Fiction Comic in 2004, cementing its status as a critical darling. For fans eager to read the source material before the fall broadcast begins, the entire 14 volume catalog is available in English on the Viz Media Official Store.
The property also spawned highly popular audio drama CDs in the late 1990s, but this upcoming project marks the first time the historic tale will transition into a fully animated series.
