The Anime Expo presentation also delivered a massive surprise for global alternative rock fans. What Is the Plot of the Story?
The story follows Aya Osawa, an optimistic, fashionable high school girl who secretly loves loud rock music but hides her hobby to maintain her social standing with her pop music loving friends. Her life changes completely when she walks into a local CD store and falls hopelessly in love with an enigmatic male clerk. Dressed in sharp, all black streetwear with an air of absolute mystery, the clerk possesses an incredible, encyclopedic knowledge of old school rock music.
However, the mysterious clerk is actually Mitsuki Koga, a deeply introverted, quiet girl who sits directly next to Aya in class. In school, Mitsuki wears bulky glasses, keeps her head down, and remains completely isolated from the rest of her classmates.
The narrative explores their blossoming relationship through a few key plot elements:
- The Accidental Persona: To retain her absolute anonymity while working at the shop, Mitsuki dresses in loose, androgynous clothing, leading Aya to mistake her for a cool young man whom she and her friends dub Onii-san.
- A Shared Passion: Bound together by an intense, genuine love for rock bands, the two high school girls grow incredibly close outside of class, sharing headphones and talking for hours.
- The Secret Identity: Mitsuki quickly catches on to Aya’s intense romantic feelings but finds herself completely paralyzed by the fear of revealing her true identity, worrying that the truth will ruin the beautiful connection they have formed.
The original manga series by Sumiko Arai initially launched as an independent short story posted directly to the author’s personal Twitter account in April 2022. Thanks to its highly distinct art style, which utilizes sharp black ink work set against a vibrant neon green accent color, the web comic exploded in global popularity. The series quickly transitioned to full serialization on the Pixiv Comic platform, eventually winning the highly prestigious 2023 Next Manga Award in the web category.
