David Fincher’s Squid Game Series Canceled by Netflix as Franchise Shifts Focus
Netflix cancels David Fincher's Squid Game spin-off Heckler. Read why the project was scrapped and what is next for the franchise.

Netflix has officially halted development on Heckler, the long-rumored English-language Squid Game spin-off directed by Oscar nominee David Fincher. First reported by The Playlist, the project was set to be written by Utopia creator Dennis Kelly and produced in the United Kingdom. Despite preliminary work on the adaptation, changing executive priorities at Netflix, leadership restructuring, and Fincher’s move to new projects led the streaming giant to quietly shelve the series. Instead of an American remake, Netflix is pivoting toward localized international projects while creator Hwang Dong-hyuk explores potential spin-off ideas.

Why Was David Fincher’s Squid Game Spin-Off Canceled?
The decision to cancel Heckler originated from Netflix rather than director David Fincher. Over the multi-year development period, the streamer experienced significant executive changes that altered its overall vision for expanding the franchise.
Several key factors contributed to the project losing momentum:
- Strategy Shift Toward Global Localizations: Rather than concentrating resources on a single American remake, Netflix aims to develop regional, country-specific spin-offs, with early discussions targeting markets like France and Norway.
- Director Schedule Conflicts: Fincher shifted his focus toward other high-profile projects, including The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a film continuation of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood starring Brad Pitt.
- Production Logistics: Despite being framed as an American story set in Los Angeles, the production was slated to film in the United Kingdom, creating operational complexities.
Speculation had previously linked Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett to Fincher’s project following her brief cameo at the end of the main series. While Blanchett noted she was open to working within the universe, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed that her cameo was an Easter egg completely unrelated to the canceled English-language series.
Will There Be Future Squid Game Spin-Offs?
Although Fincher’s English-language adaptation will not move forward, the broader universe remains active across streaming and gaming formats. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has expressed interest in exploring side stories rather than continuing the main narrative line beyond its final season.
Specifically, Hwang highlighted a concept detailing the unexplored three-year window between the first two seasons:
“I actually had this slight idea about a possible spin-off. Not a sequel, but maybe a spin-off about the three-year gap between Season 1 and Season 2, when Gi-hun is looking for recruiters. There is this three-year period, and maybe I could portray what the recruiters, or Captain Park, or the agents, or the masked men were doing during that time, not inside the gaming arena, but their lives outside of it.”
Additionally, actor Lee Byung-hun, who portrays the enigmatic Front Man, confirmed his interest in starring in a prequel centered on his character’s origin story as a former tournament winner:
“If there is a Front Man spin-off, how could I say no? It is obvious. The story of the spin-off would be crucial, though. It should be even more captivating than Squid Game. And I hope it addresses In-ho’s past, because fans are still thirsty for more.”
