The Coalition Director Promises Next Gears of War Won’t Take 7 Years
The Coalition director Mike Crump promises the next Gears of War game will not take 7 years. Learn about Gears of War: E-Day and future plans!

Following the launch of Gears of War: E-Day on October 6, 2026, development studio The Coalition is already looking toward the future of the iconic third-person shooter franchise. Speaking to the BBC shortly after launch, studio head Mike Crump confirmed that fans will not face another grueling seven-year wait for the next installment. Released for Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, as well as available on day one via Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, E-Day marks the longest gap in the series’ history since 2019’s Gears 5.
Why Did Gears of War: E-Day Take Seven Years to Develop?
The seven-year gap between Gears 5 and Gears of War: E-Day represents the longest hiatus in the franchise’s two-decade history. During this period, The Coalition rebuilt its technical pipeline on Unreal Engine 5, developing custom rendering tech to maximize lighting, destruction physics, and character detail on current-generation hardware.
According to Mike Crump, establishing this technological foundation required significant time and labor, but it now positions the studio to produce future entries much faster:
“The next game will not take nearly as long [to develop].”
How Does Gears of War: E-Day Showcase the Xbox Ecosystem?
In the same interview, Crump elaborated on the strategic role Gears of War: E-Day plays for the broader Xbox ecosystem. Serving as a flagship platform showcase, the prequel is engineered to push Xbox Series X|S console hardware to its absolute limits, demonstrating high-end visual fidelity to encourage third-party developers to leverage the platform.
- Visual Benchmark: Designed to be the best-looking title available on Xbox hardware, utilizing real-time global illumination and high-density geometry.
- Platform Anchor: Reinforces the value of Xbox exclusivity and day-one Game Pass availability for high-budget AAA blockbusters.
- Narrative Return to Roots: Set during the apocalyptic Emergence Day, returning to young Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago as they face the initial Locust invasion.
By establishing a proven technology foundation with E-Day, The Coalition aims to deliver subsequent campaign expansions and mainline continuations without multi-year engine rebuild delays.
