What is the history of Witch on the Holy Night?
Before it was a visual novel or a feature film, Mahoutsukai no Yoru was the literal starting point for the entire Nasuverse, the shared universe encompassing Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and Kara no Kyoukai.
Written by Kinoko Nasu in 1996, the original unreleased draft was the very first novel that set down the rules of his fictional world. Nasu and his high school classmates, including Type-Moon co-founder Takashi Takeuchi, believed at the time that they would not be able to write anything better for the next ten years. Nasu, inspired by the premiere of Neon Genesis Evangelion, penned a massive 400-page manuscript.
However, because he struggled to trim the narrative down to meet the 350-page submission limits of publishers like Fujimi Shobo, the book remained unpublished. Fewer than five copies of the physical draft were printed and shared exclusively among Nasu’s close circle of friends. Years later, following the massive commercial success of Tsukihime and Fate/stay night, Takeuchi convinced Nasu to rewrite the legendary manuscript into a kinetic visual novel. Released in 2012, it stood out from Type-Moon’s previous games by skipping adult content entirely to focus purely on cinematic storytelling.
What is the plot of Witch on the Holy Night?
Set during the twilight of Japan’s Showa Era in the late 1980s, the story takes place in Misaki Town. Rumors claim that a mansion sitting atop the hill is home to a real-life witch. The truth is not far off: Aoko Aozaki, the stubborn heir to a powerful line of magi, has moved into the mansion to learn sorcery under the tutelage of Alice Kuonji, a young but highly skilled witch.
The Aozaki family has long protected the spiritual land of Misaki, but strange intruders have begun disrupting the boundary fields. While investigating an attack by an enchanted mannequin, the two witches are spotted by a normal high school student, Soujuurou Shizuki. According to the laws of the Mage’s Association, any ordinary citizen who witnesses magic must be eliminated to protect the secret. Instead, due to unusual circumstances, Soujuurou ends up living with the two magical girls in their secluded mansion.
The peace does not last. The mastermind behind the town’s magical intrusions is revealed to be Touko Aozaki, Aoko’s estranged older sister. After killing their grandfather, Touko returns to Misaki to claim the family’s magical legacy and open a pathway to the “Root” of all creation, forcing the mismatched household into a deadly magical conflict.
