What Is the Story of Fool Night?

Set in a bleak future where thick clouds have blocked out the sun for a century, Earth suffers from a catastrophic lack of oxygen. To survive, society invents transfloration: a medical procedure that transforms terminally ill or desperate humans into oxygen-producing Spirit Flowers. Those who volunteer receive a massive financial payout, living out their final two years before fully turning into plant life.

The story follows Toshiro Kamiya, a young man pushed to his absolute limit. Working low-paying jobs to cover his sick mother’s expensive medical bills, Toshiro faces total financial ruin. Seeing no other escape, he volunteers for transfloration to secure the payout. However, the procedure grants him an unexpected ability: he can hear and speak to the plant-transformed humans, entangling him deep within the dark underbelly of society.
