Speaking during the season premiere of his KOJI10 radio program on TBS Radio, visionary game director Hideo Kojima addressed the ongoing secrecy surrounding OD, his enigmatic horror collaboration with Xbox Game Studios. Nearly three years after its initial reveal at The Game Awards 2023, the celebrated auteur confirmed that the silence is not a sign of production trouble, but a deliberate decision to preserve fear and deliver a true surprise to players. Co-created alongside Oscar-winning filmmaker Jordan Peele, OD aims to redefine interactive horror using cloud computing technology and digital photogrammetry.

Why Is Hideo Kojima Not Showing OD Trailers or Teasers?
Unlike his traditional marketing campaigns, which typically feature frequent trailers, lengthy gameplay deep dives, and intricate lore breakdowns, Kojima is taking a quiet approach with OD.
During the radio broadcast, Kojima acknowledged that withholding information feels unusual for him, but emphasized that keeping the project mysterious is central to its psychological horror design:
“It remains a mystery. That doesn’t mean we haven’t made the game. I want to release it quietly, without giving everything away, so players get a proper shock when they experience it for themselves.”
Kojima described OD as an experimental title designed to test player fear thresholds, combining traditional gaming mechanics with immersive cinematic storytelling. Because the underlying gameplay systems differ radically from standard survival horror tropes, Kojima admitted that he wants players to encounter the experience cold rather than dissecting mechanics through pre-release promotional clips.
How Has Filming and Performance Capture Progressed for OD?
While promotional updates remain scarce, physical production is actively moving forward. Motion capture and performance filming faced temporary delays during the SAG-AFTRA strike, causing a pause in set construction and performance capture sessions throughout late 2024.
However, Kojima confirmed that full production resumed in July, with cast members returning to set to record digital scans and performance capture data. The game utilizes Epic Games’ MetaHuman technology and Unreal Engine 5 to create hyper-realistic character models for lead actors Sophia Lillis (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) and Hunter Schafer (Euphoria). The project also features veteran actor Udo Kier, though production adjustments following his passing in 2025 have not been publicly detailed by the studio.
Is OD Safe From Xbox Studio Cuts and Cancellations?
Despite widespread restructuring, cancellations, and layoffs across Microsoft’s gaming division throughout 2026, OD remains fully funded and on track. Industry reports confirm that Xbox Game Studios continues to prioritize the title as a key exclusive, leveraging Microsoft’s Azure cloud infrastructure to power the game’s unique social mechanics.
Although no official release window has been announced, the game remains in full production, with filming expected to stretch into 2027 as Kojima Productions balances work alongside Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.
