What Is the Plot of The Kept Man of the Princess Knight?
The narrative unfolds within the chaotic, subterranean maze metropolis known as the Dungeon City, a wicked haven defined by organized crime, rampant debauchery, and sudden death. The city’s lone beacon of pure hope is Arwin, the beautiful and unyielding Crimson Knight Princess. Leading a dedicated squad of elite adventurers, Arwin regularly descends into the terrifying labyrinth at the heart of the city, hunting for a legendary ancient treasure capable of generating enough wealth to rebuild her totally fallen homeland.
While many of the world’s strongest warriors openly beg for the honor of standing by her side, that coveted position is permanently occupied by Matthew. To the public eye, Matthew is a pathetic, lazy parasite despised by the entire population as a weak coward who simply wastes the princess’s hard-earned gold on heavy drinking, low-life gambling, and brothels. However, a deep mystery shields his identity. No one in the lawless city, not even the naive knight princess herself, knows what Matthew is truly capable of when operating in the shadows, or the literal curse he bears that limits his lethal, god-tier combat prowess solely to areas untouched by direct sunlight.

Who Is the Creative Crew and Voice Cast Behind the Series?
The project brings together an exceptional blend of veteran staff members who specialize in character-driven narratives and high-intensity action sequences to properly preserve the source material’s mature aesthetic:
- Chihiro Kumano (Director): Stepping up after delivering impressive work as an assistant director on Unnamed Memory and A Couple of Cuckoos, Kumano takes the directorial reins.
- Deko Akao (Series Composition): The remarkably prolific screenwriter behind major hits like Noragami, Komi Can’t Communicate, and Arakawa Under the Bridge will spearhead the episodic script structure.
- Hisao Ishii (Character Designer): Fusing the rich, painterly illustrations of light novel artist Saki Mashima into fluid animation, Ishii provides the distinct character layouts.
- Taku Iwasaki (Music Composer): Adding massive prestige to the audio layer, the legendary composer behind Gurren Lagann, Soul Eater, and Akame ga KILL! will produce the show’s dark, jazz-infused orchestral soundtrack.
The lead voice cast features two massive industry powerhouses capable of delivering incredible emotional range:
- Junichi Suwabe voicing the dual-natured protagonist Matthew. Suwabe is globally recognized for iconic roles such as Sukuna in Jujutsu Kaisen and Archer in Fate/stay night.
- Mikako Komatsu portraying the noble but burdened Arwin. Komatsu is celebrated for voicing Maki Zen’in in Jujutsu Kaisen and Rebecca Bluegarden in Edens Zero.
Where Can You Read the Series Before the Winter Anime Season?
The original light novel series first made waves back in February 2022 under ASCII Media Works’ famous Dengeki Bunko imprint after securing the prestigious Grand Prize at the 28th Dengeki Novel Prize. The property has since spawned a successful manga adaptation illustrated by Keyyang on Kadokawa’s ComicWalker platform, followed by an ongoing sequel series titled Act 2 starting in late 2025.
International fans eager to dive into the story ahead of the January 2027 television broadcast can pick up official English localizations today.
