Studio Pierrot Promises “Almost Cinematic” Quality for Landmark 4-Episode Crossover Naruto x Ninku
Studio Pierrot targets cinematic quality for Naruto x Ninku! Get details on the 4-episode crossover, Team 7 storyline, and staff.
Animation powerhouse Studio Pierrot and publisher Shueisha have unveiled Naruto×Ninkū, a major four-episode crossover anime event produced under Pierrot Films. Formally revealed at New York Comic Con during the Project Rasengan franchise panel, the four-part special brings together Masashi Kishimoto’s iconic Naruto universe and Kōji Kiriyama’s classic Ninkū series. Studio Pierrot producer Yoshihiro Tominaga confirmed in an interview with Crunchyroll that the team is aiming for an almost cinematic visual presentation, boasting enhanced animation fluidity and modern aesthetics while preserving the beloved retro style of both franchises.
What Is the Plot and Timeline of the Naruto x Ninku Crossover?
The story of Naruto×Ninkū takes place during the early era of the original Naruto manga, specifically set prior to volume 20 when Team 7 was still developing as young shinobi.
When Kakashi Hatake is unable to lead Team 7 on an assigned mission, Naruto Uzumaki steps up as the interim team leader alongside Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno. Motivated to prove his leadership skills, Naruto guides the group, but mid-journey, Team 7 is pulled into an alternate realm. In this unfamiliar world, they encounter Fūsuke, the frog-faced wind-user and leader of the 1st Corps of the Ninkū squad, setting off a joint battle against a common threat.
Why Is Ninku So Important to Naruto Creator Masashi Kishimoto?
The collaboration carries deep historic significance for Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump history. Serialized between 1993 and 1995 across nine volumes, Kōji Kiriyama’s Ninkū served as the primary creative inspiration for Naruto.
“Without Ninkū, Naruto wouldn’t exist. Simply put, Fūsuke is Naruto’s secret mentor. I eventually began dreaming of bringing this master-and-student relationship out of the shadows and into an actual storyline.”
— Masashi Kishimoto, Author of Naruto
Originally conceived as part of the Naruto anime’s 20th anniversary celebration scheduled for September 2023, the four episodes were postponed days before release to allow Studio Pierrot to upgrade the visual quality. Re-emerging under the Pierrot Films banner with veteran director Noriyuki Abe and character designer Tetsuya Nishio returning, the project brings together the original creative architects of both anime adaptations. Voice actress Rica Matsumoto also reprises her iconic role as Fūsuke alongside Junko Takeuchi as Naruto Uzumaki.
Anime fans can stream the original Naruto series on Crunchyroll and follow official production updates through the Naruto Official Site. You can also watch full English subbed Ninku episodes on Studio Pierrot’s Official Youtube Channel.
