Hulu Formally Greenlights Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files Reboot Starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel
Hulu greenlights Ryan Coogler's The X-Files reboot series starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel! Discover plot details and production teams.

Streaming platform Hulu and Disney have officially handed a full series order to The X-Files reboot created and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed, Sinners). Moving past the pilot stage following approval from executives, the upcoming sci-fi mystery series will star Danielle Deadwyler (Till, The Piano Lesson) and Himesh Patel (Station Eleven, Yesterday) as two decorated FBI agents assigned to investigate reopened cold cases involving unexplained phenomena. The series will stream exclusively on Hulu in the United States and Disney+ internationally.
What Is the Story and Cast Setup for The X-Files Reboot?
Rather than recasting iconic characters Fox Mulder (originally played by David Duchovny) or Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), Coogler’s vision introduces an all-new character dynamic to lead the investigation into supernatural occurrences.
The story follows two decorated but drastically different FBI partners who form an unexpected bond when assigned to a long-closed division focused on paranormal anomalies. Which agent adopts the role of the unyielding believer and who acts as the analytical skeptic remains under wraps. In addition to starring roles, both Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel serve as co-executive producers on the project.
The guest cast featured throughout the first season includes notable names such as Amy Madigan, Steve Buscemi, Ben Foster, Devery Jacobs, and Lochlyn Munro.
Who Is Behind the Production and Creative Team of The X-Files Reboot?
The series order represents the culmination of a three-year development cycle under Coogler’s overall television partnership with Disney. Original franchise creator Chris Carter returned to support the project as an executive producer alongside Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian for Proximity Media, with 20th Television producing.
“I have loved The X-Files for a long time, so having the opportunity to write and direct the pilot meant a lot to me. What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world.”
— Ryan Coogler, Executive Producer and Pilot Director
While Hulu has not officially announced a premiere window or total episode count, writing and production are underway. Sci-fi fans can catch up on all eleven classic seasons of The X-Files on Hulu today while awaiting official premiere updates for Coogler’s new iteration.
