Rebuilt using Nightdive’s proprietary KEX Engine, the upcoming modern revival brings the legendary 1998 stealth masterpiece to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. The definitive edition bundles the complete original campaign alongside all extra missions from the iconic 1999 Thief Gold update.

What Features and Technical Upgrades Are Included in Thief: The Dark Project Remastered?
Nightdive Studios has remastered the seminal title within its custom KEX Engine framework to preserve the original tension while modernizing performance for contemporary displays.
- Complete Content Bundle: Includes the 12 core missions from Thief: The Dark Project along with the 3 expanded story missions and 5 new enemy types introduced in Thief Gold.
- 4K Visuals and 120 FPS Performance: Upgraded graphics feature enhanced high-resolution textures, updated 3D character models, polished animations, and minor level design fixes.
- Modernized User Interface: Introduces a revamped weapon and item selector wheel designed for fluid gamepad play, alongside modern controller support with rumble, motion control, and gyro aiming.
- Quality of Life Enhancements: Players gain access to a dedicated Mission Selector to replay completed stages, full trophy and achievement support, and built-in integration for community-created custom campaigns on PC.
How Did Thief: The Dark Project Shape the Immersive Sim Genre?
First released in November 1998 by Looking Glass Studios, Thief: The Dark Project is widely recognized as a foundational pillar of modern stealth design and systemic immersive simulations.
- Garrett’s Journey: Players take control of Garrett, a cynical master thief trained by the secret order of the Keepers, navigating a dark steampunk fantasy world plagued by political corruption, ancient cults, and corporate greed.
- Pure Stealth Mechanics: Combat actively penalizes reckless head-on sword fights, forcing players to remain hidden by monitoring light meters and listening to surface footsteps across wood, stone, and tile flooring.
- Dynamic AI and Environment Manipulation: Enemies react dynamically to shadow visibility and noise level cues. Players utilize specialized tools like water arrows to extinguish torches, moss arrows to silence footsteps, rope arrows for vertical climbing, and gas bombs for non-lethal knockouts.
Purists and new stealth fans can wishlist the title today on Steam and GOG or check for upcoming launch trailers on the Nightdive Studios YouTube Channel ahead of its December 3 release.
