What Is the Story of UNDERGROUNDED?
The game kicks off in Manhattan with a disastrous romantic setback. Scott, a shy and well-meaning young man, finally gathers the courage to propose to his girlfriend, only to be met with a prompt and devastating rejection. In his utter heartbreak and confusion, Scott accidentally drops his expensive engagement ring.
To his horror, the ring bounces down a street storm drain, falling deeper and deeper into the dark municipal sewers of New York. Determined to get it back, Scott climbs down after it, only to find that the bottom of the Manhattan sewer system leads to a massive, surreal subterranean world.
Deep beneath the city streets lies a gigantic, multi-layered dungeon where different eras of United States history and culture have physically accumulated over decades. Scott’s quest to retrieve his ring quickly transforms into a grand, time-hopping expedition.
What Are the Main Gameplay Features of UNDERGROUNDED?
As players guide Scott through the bizarre layers of this underground history museum, they will encounter several unique mechanics:
- Explore America’s Past as a Dungeon: The shifting environments are built out of the culture, technology, and collective memories of the last century. Players will traverse stylized zones representing the golden age of cinema, the intense rivalry of the Space Race, the dusty saloons of the Wild West, and cozy 1980s arcades.
- Solve Puzzles with a Feathered Guide: Scott does not have to navigate this daunting historical maze by himself. He is accompanied by a talkative, wonderfully positive yellow canary. Whenever players find themselves stuck on a complicated environmental puzzle, they can ask their avian companion for clever hints and words of encouragement.
- Reclaim What Was Lost: Scott is far from the only person who has wandered into this subterranean world. The dungeon is populated by a colorful cast of characters who have also lost something precious. By helping these eccentric individuals solve their personal troubles, Scott will experience profound personal growth and potentially change the trajectory of his own life.
- Battle Bosses via Retro 1980s Arcade Games: The depths of the dungeon are guarded by formidable, bizarre bosses. To defeat them, Scott must utilize a strange power: whenever he locates a retro arcade cabinet and begins playing, the physical world around him shifts. Boss battles are played out as nostalgic, high-energy homages to classic 80s arcade genres.
If you are a fan of clever isometric puzzle games, historical pop-culture references, or heartfelt indie stories, UNDERGROUNDED is shaping up to be an absolute must-play when it arrives on Nintendo Switch consoles later this year.
