What Is the Plot and Setting of Usual June?
First unveiled at The Game Awards 2023, Usual June takes place in the eerie coastal town of Fen Harbor. Players control June, a college student navigating her final two semesters while coming to terms with a recent personal loss and slipping academic performance.
When terrifying extra-dimensional monsters begin appearing across town while local ghosts mysteriously vanish, June discovers she can speak directly with the deceased. Alongside a cast of over 25 characters, June must team up with both the living and the dead to uncover the truth. Investigations take players through 20 distinct locations, including haunted observatories, secret research laboratories, buried tunnels, and abandoned train stations.
How Do Combat and Upgrades Work in Usual June?
Usual June features fast-paced, expressive third-person action designed to balance accessibility with deep tactical customization.
- Dynamic Melee Mechanics: Basic weapon strikes and quick dodges provide core offense and defense. Perfect dodges refill June’s super meter, allowing players to execute high-impact super attacks, cancel animations, and parry incoming blows.
- Charms and Loadout Customization: Equipping different Charms alters June’s combat stance and overall playstyle, allowing players to adapt to various boss mechanics.
- XP Progression and Power Costs: Earning experience unlocks new ranged projectiles, defensive barriers, elemental traps, and spectral summons. However, powerful abilities carry specific costs and trade-offs that players must discover as they level up.
Action fans can wishlist the title and play the demo on Steam ahead of the January 20, 2027 launch.
