What Is 1666: Amsterdam and Who Is Developing It?
1666: Amsterdam is a story-led third-person action-adventure game created by Panache Digital Games, the Montreal studio previously responsible for Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey. Spearheaded by visionary director Patrice Désilets, the project originally began over a decade ago at THQ Montreal before undergoing a prolonged legal journey that ended with Désilets reacquiring full rights to the intellectual property.
The game presents an eerie, supernatural interpretation of 17th-century Netherlands during the golden age of Amsterdam. Beneath the bustling surface of trade, power, and wealth lies an ancient occult hierarchy that has secretly governed human destiny for centuries.
What Is the Gameplay Story and Setting of 1666: Amsterdam?
The story of 1666: Amsterdam centers on two interconnected protagonists across distinct eras:
- Noa Brooklyn: A young apprentice apothecary living in 1666 who secretly belongs to the Zaindari coven. Chosen as the Collector during her ritual commencement, Noa wields witchcraft to track down corrupted entities known as the Originals.
- Aaron: A university professor from 1999 whose consciousness becomes magically displaced following an occult ceremony, causing him to experience the historical world through the eyes of Noa’s black cat familiar.
Ancient beings called the Originals have granted power and extra lifespan to humans for generations. Every 333 years, a cosmic cycle turns, and these demonic entities come to collect their debt. Players must investigate mysterious occurrences in broad daylight and battle terrifying demonic forces when night falls.
What Features Were Revealed in the Second Gameplay Feature Trailer?
The latest trailer focuses heavily on the game’s prologue narrative and character mechanics. Key highlights from the new video overview include:
- The Collector’s Journey: A closer look into Noa’s early development as she embraces her dark lineage and accepts the mantle of the Collector.
