Sony’s flagship anime streaming platform Crunchyroll has officially unlocked a major new frontier in connected entertainment. In an ambitious strategic move revealed on August 12, 2026, Crunchyroll announced a global partnership with Appning, the automotive application distribution ecosystem powered by mobility technology giant Forvia. The integration brings over 50,000 episodes and 25,000 hours of anime directly into vehicle infotainment systems around the world.
Table Of Content
The rollout debuts across current BMW and MINI models, with immediate plans to scale across the broader BMW Group and extend to over 40 distinct automotive brands. Compatible manufacturers utilizing the Android-based Appning platform include high-profile marques such as Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Lotus, and Leapmotor.
What Is the Crunchyroll Appning In-Car Streaming Service?
The new integration allows vehicle owners to access their complete Crunchyroll library natively from their dashboard screens. Operating through Forvia’s Android-based Appning store, which hosts over 300 connected applications such as YouTube, Spotify, and Zoom, Crunchyroll functions as a fully integrated dashboard application.
To deliver a personalized user experience inside the cabin, the platform integrates TiVo’s content discovery engine. Subscribers can browse customized recommendations, track currently airing simulcasts, and curate watchlists directly on the center console.
How Does Safety Blocking Work During Vehicle Movement?
Driver safety remains the foundational constraint of the Appning platform. To eliminate driver distraction, video playback automatically locks the moment the vehicle shifts out of park or begins moving.
- Parked Mode: Full access to streaming video, series browsing, and episode playback.
- Drive Mode: Automatic video lock engagement, aligning with international road safety standards applied to apps like YouTube.
This safety framework positions the feature as an ideal amenity for electric vehicle (EV) charging stops, roadside rest breaks, or waiting inside parked vehicles.
Why Is Crunchyroll Expanding into Automotive Infotainment Systems?
The automotive expansion reflects a broader industry shift toward converting vehicles into secondary living spaces. Speaking on the strategic goals of the rollout, Brian McGarvey, Senior Vice President of Global Distribution and Business Development at Crunchyroll, highlighted changing consumer habits:
“Today’s consumers expect their entertainment to be available wherever they are, including inside their vehicle. With Crunchyroll soon arriving at global automotive partners, the anime experience will become even more accessible on every trip. Through this collaboration with Appning, we are pleased to provide yet another way for this passionate global community of fans to enjoy their favorite anime.”
With anime fandom demonstrating exceptionally high retention rates across Gen Z and Millennial demographics, bringing high-demand catalogs into connected cars strengthens subscriber engagement outside traditional home theater environments.
