Base PS5 Just Got a Huge AI Upgrade: How QSSR Enhances Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei
Sony officially brings AI upscaling to the base PS5 with QSSR technology. Check out how Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei use it today!
Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially rolled out Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), bringing dedicated AI-powered image upscaling to the standard PlayStation 5 console. Announced via the official PlayStation Blog, this lightweight evolution of the PS5 Pro’s flagship technology instantly improves image clarity and temporal stability. Standard PS5 owners can experience the tech immediately, as Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Wolverine and Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Yōtei have received day-one patches adding QSSR as an optional graphics setting.

What Is QSSR on PlayStation 5?
Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is Sony’s proprietary AI upscaling solution designed specifically for the base PlayStation 5 console architecture. Developed under Project Amethyst in a close graphics research collaboration with AMD, QSSR bridges the gap between conventional spatial upscaling methods like FSR and machine learning reconstruction.
While the high-end PlayStation 5 Pro utilizes PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) backed by custom hardware, QSSR adapts those machine learning principles to run efficiently within the standard console’s FP16 computing limits. It processes rendering output frame by frame, analyzing images pixel by pixel to output higher detail while eliminating shimmering, aliasing, and motion noise.
How Does QSSR Differ From PS5 Pro PSSR?
Sony remains explicit about the performance hierarchy across its console family. PSSR continues to serve as the gold standard for image reconstruction on the PS5 Pro. However, QSSR delivers a massive visual upgrade over traditional non-AI reconstruction methods on the standard console without taxing hardware budgets.
- Streamlined Neural Network Architecture: QSSR uses a shrunken, optimized AI model specifically built to minimize frame-time overhead on standard PS5 hardware.
- Hand-Tuned Optimization: Engineers tuned the algorithm to leverage the base console’s 16-bit floating-point (FP16) packed math capabilities.
- Targeted Spatial and Temporal Stability: The upscaler specializes in removing edge flicker, camera-pan jitter, and visual noise across complex geometries.
According to Daniel Craig, principal engineer of graphics research and development at Sony Interactive Entertainment, bringing full PSSR capabilities to the original console was previously impossible due to computing requirements. QSSR solves this limitation through a lightweight framework that maximizes visual return per compute cycle.
Which Games Support QSSR Currently?
Sony launched QSSR alongside immediate updates for two of its most prominent first-party blockbusters:
Marvel’s Wolverine
Insomniac Games integrated QSSR into Marvel’s Wolverine as an extra enhancement for environmental detail. Technology Director Mike Fitzgerald noted that QSSR adds pixel-level stability and clarity to complex areas ranging from the streets of Madripoor to the neon alleyways of Shinjuku. Players can access the title on the PlayStation Store to test the new graphics toggles in performance and fidelity modes.
Ghost of Yōtei
Sucker Punch Productions leveraged the technology to resolve fine structures across open-world landscapes. Lead Rendering Engineer Jasmin Patry highlighted that QSSR resolves fine details across character models and swaying foliage with a degree of temporal stability never before seen on the standard PS5 console.
When Will More PS5 Games Get QSSR Support?
Sony has confirmed that the QSSR developer library is officially available to all PlayStation software creators worldwide. Moving forward, third-party and first-party studios can incorporate QSSR directly into production pipelines or add it to existing releases via post-launch updates. This rollout opens the door for widespread adoption across the standard console’s massive software library.
