Why Was Kena: Scars of Kosmora Delayed to 2027?
Ember Lab cited the sheer scale of the project as the main reason for postponing the launch. Unlike Kena: Bridge of Spirits, which Ember Lab self-published, Scars of Kosmora is a significantly larger production backed directly by PlayStation.
In their joint statement on the PlayStation Blog, Thomas Varga and Josh Grier shared:
“Since our announcement trailer in February, we have been fully focused on getting Kena: Scars of Kosmora to the finish line. Delaying our release to 2027 gives us the ability to truly polish the expanded gameplay experience we want to deliver.”
The studio emphasized that extra time is required to ensure the sequel exceeds the quality standards set by the original while delivering a far more expansive world.
What Is the Story and Setting of Kena: Scars of Kosmora?
Set after the events of Bridge of Spirits, the narrative follows a more experienced and mature Kena. While she excels at helping lost spirits resolve their lingering grief, she continues to battle her own emotional trauma. This personal struggle brings her to the uncharted island of Kosmora, accompanied by her childhood friend Orfio, as they search for answers regarding their shared lineage.
- Elemental Cultures: Kosmora is inhabited by four distinct societies, each historically shaped by one of the fundamental elements.
- Alchemystic Temples: Ancient Spirit Guides erected these massive, dungeon-like challenge zones across the island. Clearing these complex temples rewards players with essential abilities and progression upgrades.
- Deeper Lore: While modern inhabitants have lost touch with their spiritual roots, Kena’s journey forces her to uncover forgotten secrets buried deep within the island.
How Does Gameplay Work in Kena: Scars of Kosmora?
While Scars of Kosmora maintains a linear, character-focused story structure, its expanded landmass offers considerably more freedom for players who explore off the beaten path. To solve traversal challenges across Kosmora’s vast regions, Ember Lab has introduced a new companion:
- Canine Mount and Combat Partner: Kena earns a mysterious, crystalline dog-like companion tied directly to Kosmora’s origins.
- Enhanced Traversal: Players can ride the canine mount to traverse large distances across the island rapidly.
- Synergistic Combat: The companion assists Kena in real-time battles, tackling enemies on the ground and offering mounted combat techniques.
- Puzzle Solving: The creature helps activate Alchemystic mechanisms throughout temples and environmental zones.
