What Is the Story and Setting of System Shock VR?
System Shock VR preserves the baseline premise of the 1994 cult classic and its modern remake. Players step into the boots of an unnamed hacker caught attempting to breach files belonging to the powerful TriOptimum Corporation. Executive Edward Diego offers a shady bargain: hack into Citadel Station’s central artificial intelligence, strip away its ethical constraints, and walk away with complete freedom plus an experimental neural implant.
Six months after undergoing surgery in a medical coma, the hacker awakens to a nightmare. The untethered AI, SHODAN, has taken complete control of the facility. The human crew has been slaughtered, mutated, or converted into mindless cybernetic monstrosities, and SHODAN has set her sights on destroying Earth.
How Does Gameplay Work inside Citadel Station in Virtual Reality?
Players must navigate the intricate, interconnected decks of Citadel Station in full motion-tracked VR. Exploration spans medical bays, research laboratories, dark maintenance tunnels, corporate executive suites, and oxygen-rich biological groves. Progression requires back-tracking through previously locked doors as players obtain higher security clearance, keycodes, and new hardware upgrades.
- Tactical Investigation: Dismantle SHODAN’s influence by destroying security cameras and computer nodes to lower the security level on each deck.
- Resource Discovery: Rummage through crew audio logs, personal emails, technical manuals, weapons, ammo, and healing dermal patches.
- Puzzle Solving: Complete physical circuit boards and systems access panels to hijack station functions back from the rogue AI.
- Full Inventory Management: Balance health, firearm energy, ammunition reserves, and installed neural hardware on the fly.
What Are the Major Virtual Reality Features and Cyberspace Overhauls?
The core highlight of this port is its total reimagining of Cyberspace. Players physically plug their neural interface into terminals across Citadel Station, diving into a digital world rendered with full six degrees of movement (6DoF). Inside Cyberspace, you fly through virtual nodes, shoot down hostile security programs, steal softkeys, and open physical doors on the station from within the matrix.Combat requires physical interaction with an array of weaponry, ranging from wrench pipe melee tools and conventional projectile guns to plasma rifles and high-yield explosives.
Who Is Developing System Shock VR and How Is It Funded?
System Shock VR is being built by Flat2VR Studios, an organization that originated as a passionate community modding collective dedicated to porting traditional flat-screen games into virtual reality. Today, Flat2VR Studios operates as an independent studio.
This project is fully self-funded alongside publisher Impact Inked, operating without exclusive financial backing from major platform holders like Meta. This self-funded path gives the team total creative freedom to ship the title across all major VR ecosystems simultaneously.
